    This is essential to Wgtn being 'the' compact city where lifestyle and ease of living in a vibrant city are central attractors to visitors and new citizens. It so many spin offs - environment, health, social networks etc... less hui, more dui - GET ON WITH IT!!!

    Cycleways are a good idea but needs to be balanced against the needs of other road users as well.
    Where possible cycleways should be located in areas away from shopping centres as parking is needed for shops and services and pedestrians. Targetting of cycleways towards actual areas of need and balancing investment between recreational and commuter requirements needs to be undertaken.

    Building more roads only delays a problem of congestion, alternative transport answers it. Who wants to sit in a car for 40mins every morning watching other people sit in cars. Let show the world that getting out on your bike, scooter, trainers is far more fun, healthy, common sense, better for the environment, quicker, cheaper, more social and how we can come up with new ways to retrofit around existing buildings.

    Unique to Wellington?? Implementing safer cycling infrastructure is critical to ongoing health of Wellington. Every cyclist alleviates the pressure on a strained transport network. Even Auckland is able to progress safer cycling networks - it is shameful that a city that prides itself on being green and progressive cannot even put a spade in the ground on the easiest beginning. How many more cyclists need to be killed on Wellington streets before this council takes action?

    It is a fantastic idea to have more cycleways in Wellington - I'd love to cycle into town from the suburbs. Could we promote all the benefits - ie get fit, loose weight, save money on petrol, save the DHB health $, be fabulous! Maybe we could have artistic input into creating fabulous, gorgeous (but not distracting) cycleways? Make it fun.

    I commute all the time on a bicycle, but with our current Wellington roads it is too dangerous and unpleasant for most people. I’ve seen colleagues give up after a scare or worse. Proper cycle lanes would see many more people cycle to work, easing congestion for other road users. City planners should also look at creative options for widening footpaths that cyclists can then use as well. Tokyo has that, and it works very well.

    Wellington is well behind many other cities in making sure cycling is an accessible option for people. We have a small enough city that most trips can be completed by bike - we just need the infrastructure to ensure they can be completed safely. Hills I can deal with, angry drivers trying to push me off the road? Not so much.

    Wellingtons roads are to narrow for cycleways, why can't the cyclist have them through the greenbelt?

    I don't ride currently because I don't know it's safe. A lot of the cyclists I know have had accidents or near misses. I would be happy to cycle if there were safe cycleways. I don't think it needs to be unique, it just needs to be good - pretty much every city I visit has better cycleways than wellington does.

    Implementing modern cycling infrastructure has been done in many other cities, and Wellington is falling behind. Wellington is possibly unique in the attitude that "it can't be done", which was once thought in many cities where successful cycling networks have been built.
